Music

The goal of the music program is to educate, inspire and provide a creative outlet where students appreciate music. St. Theresa’s school provides students with a strong sense of self, pride in accomplishments and an understanding of the differences and similarities in the world around them.  Students learn note reading, identify and appreciate various composers. Students learn to sing in different languages as well as developing an understanding of church hymns and their relationship to the Mass.

The program challenges the students to learn rhythm, how to dance to music and creating a musical beat with various instruments, including xylophones, drums, tambourines, and other percussion instruments.  This helps and guides their musical intelligence.

The students perform in Christmas and spring shows. The students dance, sing and play instruments. Many students have the confidence to sing solos in front of a large audience. Each show has a theme which relates to various composers or events, for example Rogers and Hammerstein, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. The students also write reports about the featured composer to familiarize themselves with an understanding of their songs.

The students explore cultural music, and traditions, instrument playing and movement to musical beats. The students learn traditional dances of countries and their origins within the culture. Through the music program, students experience the power of music. Students discover music is a way to communicate and to express themselves.
